Purity is Death, Transgression Divine
a solo exhibition featuring constructed paintings by Bruce Price
May 23-June 28, 2013
Reception: May 23, 5-8pm
Emmanuel Gallery is pleased to announce the first summer show of 2013 titled Purity is Death, Transgression Divine, a solo exhibition featuring constructed paintings by Bruce Price. We will open this exhibition May 23 and it will continue through Friday, June 28. The opening reception for the artist will be on May 23 from 5-8pm.
Purity is Death, Transgression Divine will focus on a body of work Price started over a decade ago. The majority of the works featured are three dimensional, canvas boxes. With an intense use of color, pattern and texture, each box’s proportions is calculated using aspects of sacred geometry, particularly the Divine proportion of architecture. From whirlpool galaxies & tornados to seashells and leaves the divine proportion is present in how the universe orders itself. Culturally, the use of this proportion has been understood to a line a design with the divine. Death, Transgression Divine resists this conceit through the impure or transgression of multiple differing systems. From perfect lines to accidental and ‘damage’ marks, mass-produced and handmade canvas, sacred & profane proportions, minimalism & expressionism, painting & objects, an ‘almost but not quite’ presence. Irresistibly playful the push between pattern and negative space is amplified by their three-dimensionality; one never sees the whole piece at one time.
